Motorbikes or ‘piki-pikies’
Motorbikes or ‘piki-pikies’ also offer an efficient and inexpensive way of getting around and are used extensively throughout Kenya to transport goods and people. In Kenya motor-bike drivers are not constricted - as they are in other countries - by the need to ensure that passengers wear safety helmets so piki-pikies can be flagged down and pick up passengers in much the same way as cabs do in New York or London. Risper can get a pikipiki to come to the house and take you to the market in Kwale or the bus-station for around 50/- ($0.50) and the driver will also take you all the way to Diani and bring you back if you wish. However we don’t recommend this as the road is steep and there is a lot of traffic at times. The case for wearing crash helmets on motorcycles is so obvious as to not need to be re-stated and we don’t recommend using a Piki-piki without a crash helmet although many do so. The road between the house and Kwale is slow and there is little traffic.
